VANILLA PRICE CRISIS CREATES INSTABILITY FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF FARMERS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Only industrial player in the world to be active in all three major production areas of Vanilla (Madagascar, Papua New Guinea and East Africa), Envirium Life Sciences has always been committed to paying a fair price to the farmers, supporting their livelihood as well as the environment through a sustainable agriculture. We are grateful to the clients of our subsidiaries Sopral in Madagascar, Kamapim in Papua New Guinea and Copak in The Democratic Republic of Congo who share and support this vision.

After announcing a set price for green vanilla, the Malagasy authorities suddenly liberalized prices in the midst of the campaign. As a consequence, vanilla market volatility creates instability for hundreds of thousands of farmers and their families in Madagascar and around the world.

In a compelling paper authored by Tiana Ramanoelina and published in Perspectives (N°7, September-October 23), Georges Geeraerts, President of the Madagascar Vanilla Exporters Group, reminds the pressing need for ensuring a guaranteed minimum income for farmers, enabling them to have a decent salary. At this stage, this can only be achieved through a sustained market price that had been committed to for years by the key industrials.
