MADAGASCAR- CYCLONE GEZANI: SOPRAL DEMONSTRATES RESILIENCE AND SOLIDARITY

Posted on :

On the night of February 10–11, 2026, the intense tropical cyclone Gezani struck the city of Tamatave (Toamasina) on the east coast of Madagascar. Violent winds (over 300 km/h) and torrential rains destroyed or severely damaged around 75% of the city, causing major destruction to homes and infrastructure. The disaster left thousands of residents homeless and plunged the region into a humanitarian emergency.

Nearly a month after this tragedy, our thoughts remain with the entire local community, which continues to face the daily consequences of the cyclone.

• At Sopral, Envirium Life Sciences' subsidiary in Madagascar, we are fortunate that none of our employees — whether permanent staff or day workers — were injured. • Our industrial site was affected, but our strategic facilities — the canning plant and the #vanilla processing unit — sustained only limited damage that can be repaired in the short term. • Most of our stock remains intact, allowing us to gradually resume our operations starting this week. • Our supplier partners have confirmed that our sourcing areas suffered little to no damage, ensuring the continuity of our supply chain.

From the very first hours following the disaster, we mobilized to support our employees:

  • Food distribution
  • Donations to help rebuild damaged homes
  • Interest-free loans for affected employees

We would also like to thank the GEFP (Groupement des Entreprises Franches et Partenaires) for its generous food donations, which further strengthened our solidarity efforts.

Thanks to the energy and dedication of our teams from the very first hours, clean-up, debris removal, and restoration operations began immediately and have continued tirelessly over the past three weeks. A huge thank you to everyone involved!

In the face of this terrible ordeal, SOPRAL demonstrates that resilience, solidarity, and commitment are the pillars of our collective strength.
